Hospital in Lviv / Ukraine
TOOLS FOR LIFE supports with EurAsia Heart, a European doctors and logistics company, to improve the conditions at OCHMATDYT, the Lwiwer regional children's hospital in Ukraine.
Within OCHMATDYT's heart surgery department, about 70 kilometres from Chernobyl, children aged from new-borns to 18, are treated for diverse conditions, including: cardiovascular disease, disease of the lungs and gullet, gastro-intestinal disorders, and kidney disease. They are also treated for emergencies and trauma.
The conditions in this hospital are unbearable. Of the 40 available operating rooms, only one is still fully functional. In fact, most of the children and young people with heart conditions are currently not receiving operations with a heart-lung machine - donated by TOOLS FOR LIFE in 2008** - due to the inadequate equipment. Subpar treatment is also a result of lack of consistant power supply. Together, TOOLS FOR LIFE and EurAsia Hear, aim to build a functioning cardiac surgery unit for children and young people, as well as to train an on-site team who will be responsible for the oversight of the medical and technological components of the hospital. As part of this initiative, TOOLS FOR LIFE is also working with and training the Medical and Technology team, FROM WHERE, with the target of encouraging and promoting long-term self-sufficiency.
**For Christmas 2008, EurAsia Hearts and employees from ROTHENBERGER donated a valuable transport lorry containing vital medical equipment, as well as bed linens and toys to the Lwiwer regional children's hospital. The relief supplies are just a start to improving the lives of the young patients.
